Zanzibar island is a pearl in the Indian Ocean. Endless white powdery beaches with coconut palms, shallow turquoise waters, beautiful coral reefs and blood orange sunsets. Some of Zanzibar’s beaches are so peaceful and remote that the lapping of the Indian ocean is the only sound you can hear. This tropical beach destination offers outstanding beaches combined with a colourful history and an endless variety of activities.
Tropical beaches
Zanzibar island is probably the best getaway in East Africa, offering world’s most beautiful tropical beaches. The east coast of Zanzibar is where the best beaches are located, all with coral white sand and clear turquoise waters, flanked by barrier reefs. Here you can unwind and experience laid back beach life. The beaches offer plenty of opportunities for surfers, snorkelers, divers and sunbathers.
Exciting watersports.
Watersports enthusiasts come to Zanzibar for the excellent scuba diving, snorkelling, deep sea fishing, kayaking, kite- and windsurfing, (para)sailing and canoeing. Swim among beautiful reef fish and gaze at the abundant marine life including manta rays, turtles and reef sharks. Glide through the Indian Ocean in a traditional wooden sailing boat while enjoying the curious dolphins swimming besides you. Witness the majestic whale sharks and whales migrate past the island twice a year.
Old Stone Town
The unique thing about Zanzibar is the blend of cultures. It has a long interesting history, but also a vibrant modern culture. In the old Stone Town you will get not only Africa, but Arabia, India and Europe in one colourful package. This lively and spiritual town is the cultural and historical heart of Zanzibar. Walk through the small streets and discover its historical beauty, the nice restaurants, churches, mosques, bazaars and gardens. Interesting places to visit on a cultural tour are the Sultan’s Palace, the slave market, the House of Wonders and Darajani market place. The architectural style of the Stone Town buildings is a unique mixture of various influences and cultures.
Activities
There are so many things to do on Zanzibar and surroundings: spice and food tours, snorkeling and scuba diving, sailing, fishing, island hopping, visiting local markets, Stone Town, Prison Island, Jozani National Park, Forodhani Park, Christ Church Cathedral, Palace Museum, Butterly Centre, Cheetah’s Rock and so much more.
Best time to visit
From June to November is the best time to visit Zanzibar because the temperature averages 26°C (79°F). Visiting in January and February is also recommended as this is usually a dry period between the two rainy seasons.
Tip from Lomo expert
Take a boat to Nakupende Beach, a large sandbank in the middle of the sea. White sand, crystal clear blue water and tropical views. An amazing place to relax, snorkel, swim and enjoy the sun. Only 20 minutes away from Stone Tone. A few of the best beaches on the eastern coastline of Zanzibar are Nungwi, Paje, Mnemba, Kiwengwe, Dongwe, Matemwe and Kizimkazi.
